Birch

Birch (or Betula alleghaniensis), which can be found in cabinetry and toothpicks, grows in the Eastern and Northeastern parts of the United States. A relatively hard hardwood of good strength and durability, birch has a uniformly fine texture and straight grain that often has a wavy pattern. The color of the wood can vary from white to light reddish brown, depending on which part of the tree it originates. Birch dries very slowly, but it does a very good job accepting stain.
